Strong Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks Early Tuesday Morning
By Robert Roy Britt, November 16, 2009
One of the best annual meteor showers will peak in the pre-dawn hours Tuesday, and for some skywatchers the show could be quite impressive.
The best seats are in Asia, but North American observers should be treated to an above average performance of the Leonid meteor shower, weather permitting. The trick for all observers is to head outside in the wee hours of the morning – between 1 a.m. and dawn – regardless where you live…
Greens blast the anti-choice Stupak Amendment in the Democrats’ health care bill, predict voter anger and defections from the Democratic Party over the amendment
Green Party leaders today called the Stupak Amendment in the recently passed US House bill on health care reform a disaster for women’s reproductive rights and a betrayal of the Democrats’ stated support for women’s rights and well-being.
Many Greens foresee growing anger among Democratic voters, especially women, and possible defections from the Democratic Party over the amendment.
The Stupak Amendment to HR 3962 states that any health care plan purchased with any federal subsidy cannot cover abortion services, even with private funds, and prohibits the public plan from covering abortion care. The amendment will make it more difficult and expensive for anyone to purchase a plan with abortion coverage and discourages insurers and employers who provide health care benefits from affording such coverage.
Candace Caveny, Green candidate for the US House in Michigan’s 10th District (http://www.candacecaveny.org) in 2010 said,
Michigan Greens targeted Bart Stupak’s District One seat in Congress with the candidacy of Jean Treacy, who challenged his opposition to women’s rights, including the freedom to choose. The Stupak Amendment is the sharpest blow against poor women and their rights since the Hyde Amendment. It was proposed by a Democrat and passed by a Democratic Congress. We challenge feminists, feminist and progressive organizations, and all Americans who support rights and equality for women to stop supporting candidates who retreat from these principles, and to vote Green instead.
Greens called the Stupak Amendment a direct consequence of a public debate on health care reform that has been mostly limited to Republican ‘no reform’ versus Democratic ‘faux reform.’ Read more »

Joe Bruno, Albany sleaze: His trial has already convicted Capitol’s squalid doings/ Editorials / 11-14-2009
Whatever its outcome, the trial of former Senate boss Joe Bruno has torn the lid off the cesspool that is Albany.
Testimony elicited by prosecutors may or may not prove Bruno guilty of a crime. But the evidence reveals how business gets done, and money changes hands, in the Capitol’s infamous back rooms.
KW: Wow! It’s funny. Hillary Clinton just said in an interview that she wanted to quash rumors that keep coming up that she may run for Governor in NY in 2010. I follow these things pretty closely, and, I don’t remember hearing that rumor.
Oh, well. It’s not like we like to mention Democrats around here. But, the Governor’s race matters a lot for third parties in New York. So, we better keep an eye on who the other candidates will be.

…For example, budget hawks in Congress say they’ll vote against the bill because it’s too expensive. Maybe you could win them over if you volunteered to cut out funding for male-exclusive stuff, like prostate cancer, Viagra, male infertility, vasectomies, growth-hormone shots for short little boys, long-term care for macho guys who won’t wear motorcycle helmets and, I dunno, psychotherapy for pedophile priests. Men could always pay in advance for an insurance policy rider, as women are blithely told they can do if Stupak becomes part of the final bill… Read more »
I don’t think that the activist community in Suffolk County realized our police had tasers. People should try to stop the use of this weapon. It has a history of abuse and suffering. Police think it is non-lethal, so they overuse it, which creates consequences like the death of a man in Coram. There are some examples of taser horror stories at John Turley’s Constitutional law blog: here.

Coram Man Dead After Struggle With Cops High on cocaine, man locked himself in house before cops arrived
A 43-year-old Coram man died early this morning after struggling with Suffolk cops.
Police from the Sixth Precinct were called to 6 Petersburg Ct. in Coram at 2:46 a.m. after a man called 911 and reported his brother, Daryl Bain, was high on cocaine and had locked him out of his house…
A Taser was used, but Bain did not stop resisting. Eventually, the cops were able to subdue and handcuff Bain.
Shortly after, Bain stopped breathing. CPR was performed and Bain was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, where he died a short time later.

Homeowners in New London, Connecticut took on the city’s leaders after they announced plans to condemn all of the homes in one neighborhood to make way for a private development project for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The city said it would bring in thousands of jobs. After a 2005 Supreme Court ruling against the homeowners, the entire neighborhood was bulldozed. This week Pfizer announced it is shutting down its research center.

KW: Recently re-elected Brookhaven Councilperson Keith Romaine died this morning. It is sad on a variety of levels…he was young; he had just worked hard in a campaign; and his dad is Ed Romaine, a Republican lawmaker who has been very cordial and listening to local greens.
It seems like third party folks should be aware of this:

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 8 Assemblyman Philip Boyle, a Republican of Suffolk County, often calls himself the poster child for redistricting reform. In 2002, his good Republican home was carefully drawn into a Democratic district. As a result, Mr. Boyle decided not to run again until a few years later when a Republican assemblyman in the district next door resigned. Of course, Mr. Boyle had to sell his home and move. He has learned his lesson. “I rent now,” he says. “I’m concerned that they’re going to change the lines again.”
