It brings me sad new to say that the Machine (the Molecule Maker) that fueled the Nylon & Steel Band. Mostly the live shows for nearly 7 out of its 10 year run w/ the band was laid to rest in the green dumpster on Monday. Even though the band has not been together in nearly 7 yrs, Molecule Maker (as it was called by the band & the fans) was repaired seven times in the past but, after losing a long battle of its entire liquid that leaked out do to a small crack in the shell. Doctors were unable to salvage it. Ode to Joy was played after it was tossed.
The molecule maker first came into play when the band’s bassist David Bartow was trying to create a psychedelic light show with Drummer Paul Cama in the early 90’s (in the vein of Josh Light Show who did it for the Dead & Airplane in the 60’s.) Read the rest of this entry »
KW: Our old friend Sonny Meadows just released a new CD, “Tolerance.” We will definitely be telling you more about it soon. Though, since Sonny was so timely to get it out last month, thought we should definitely tell you about the song, “Family Reunion 4th of July.” You can hear a preview of the album –including the 4th of July song — at cdbaby.com: here. For the record, Sonny Meadows’ family values include potato salad AND beer. He’s very tolerant.
Also appearing on the CD are: Sonny Speed (co-producer and various instruments); Jon Foreman; Jeff Curtis; Robert Langley; Frank Gambino; and the mysterious “Pamela” on backing vocals.

Beginning on June 24th, 2009, the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council proudly announces that a new concert series, the Picnic Supper Harborside Park Concerts will take place on the lawn of beautiful Harborside Park on the water next to the Port Jefferson Village Center, 101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson.
These concerts will be a very welcome new addition for the community. The very popular and talented performers in this series appeal to all ages, and these concerts are FREE to the public. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and their own blankets or lawn chairs. This is a terrific way to connect with neighbors, and make new friends while enjoying wonderful music and spectacular sunsets over Port Jefferson Harbor. A delightful small playground is adjacent to the concert area, so parents can enjoy the music while amusing the little ones who cannot sit still.
Soaring vocal harmonies, sing-a-long favorites of the Sixties, pre-War and ragtime jazz, rockabilly, country-flavored pop tunes, and delightful originals by these talented songwriters are all featured in this series.
Pisces Cafe is our favorite eatery, and the best place in the world for an interesting cup of tea. Pisces is usually opened for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Though, this weekend, they will also be open on Sunday (June 7, 2009) to celebrate the sidewalk festival in Babylon Village – Spring Fling.
Pisces serves loose tea. And, if you tell them your mood, your favorite flavors, or to just surprise you, they will mix and match a tea just for you. They have also started carrying all the little goodies such as teapots with built in filters, mesh tea balls, and even mate straws that will allow you to enjoy tea at home, too.
They have a great lunch menu, including meals for vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The veggie burger is awesome! The Pisces veggie burger has boysenberry sauce. Yum. Yum. Read the rest of this entry »

Carlin’s voice integrates Diana Krall’s husky croon with Amy Winehouse’s distinctive energy and Ani DiFranco’s artistic freedom, creating a sound so unique that fans always recognize her songs by her exquisite presence. From violently chastising American democracy to glorifying spontaneous love, Carlin’s original lyrics are as wildly inventive as her impulsive scat-singing. Her influences range from Elliott Smith to Ella Fitzgerald. Carlin currently lives in both Brooklyn and Hampton Bays while she studies jazz at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. http://www.stephaniecarlin.com/
Carlin self-released her first EP at 16, which led to the formation of the band, Oliver Lankard. Carlin was the manager, vocalist, and guitarist of the jazz-rock band. The ten piece band, complete with a three-piece horn section and doo-wop vocalists, fused Stephanie’s intimate lyricism with a driving funk beat. Oliver Lankard performed at dozens of metropolitan venues, including: The Knitting Factory, where they worked alongside David Peel (of John Lennon’s Yoko Ono Band); and Maxwell’s (opening act for Franz Nicolay of The Hold Steady). Oliver Lankard also performed at the Original Sessions National Band Search and The Crazy Donkey’s Unsigned Band Festival. All ten members were under eighteen at the time, and the band’s growing successes were short-lived when its members drifted out of high school and on to college.
In August 2008, nineteen-year-old Carlin released her second acoustic-rock CD, the Agony and Ecstasy of,captivating the gut-wrenching loves and losses of the human heart.. Before the record was even released, Carlin was offered a recording contract which she promptly turned down because the label was more interested in having her “look cute” instead of making uniquely profound music. Lately, she has performed at: Columbia University, Broadway Comedy Club, Time Out New York Lounge, and The Stone, amongst other metropolitan venues. Carlin also sings regularly with Long Island’s very own The Debra Liso Band featuring Prentiss McNeil.

Muntadhar Al-Zeidi was beaten in custody, and then sentenced to 3 years in prison. Thankfully, his sentence has been reduced to only one year. As this article notes, he should go free immediately. Keep him in your thoughts, and consider ways to appeal further.
For Muntadhar Al-Zeidi and for the people he speaks for: "the widows and orphans and the people that died" in the War in Iraq.
