Update: Diane White speaks at Harrisburg City Council

Important update from Diane White, as of the afternoon of September 11th:

“When I called my pre-trial supervisor this afternoon, I was told that my hearing was not on the schedule. [for Sept. 12] She said I would be receiving a notification by mail when it has been rescheduled.”

Update: Diane White speaks at Harrisburg City Council

I was glad to see that my friend Diane White, who was recently abused by a police officer at a local block party, received coverage in her local media. It was very brave of Diane to go to her city council meeting tonight, and speak up about the bigger issue of policing in her neighborhood. The last update that I had was that Diane White would have a hearing about the charges brought against her on September 12th. [POSTPONED! See note above] And, last I heard, there was no police report filed about the incident.

Friends and supporters could contact Chief Keller of the Harrisburg City police to ask that the police drop the charges against Diane White: Police Chief Keller (717) 255-3131.

by JOHN LUCIEW / Of The Patriot-News, 09/11/07 11:52 PM EDT

Members of the community group Harrisburg ACORN called on the City Council Tuesday night to investigate the arrest of one of the group’s officer earlier this month as city police broke up a block party on South 16th Street in Allison Hill.

Diane White, an ACORN officer, local political activist and a former candidate for mayor, told the council she was physically subdued and arrested and faces felony charges stemming from the Sept. 1 incident. Continue reading

Taxpayer Alert! Atomic Power Corps Back in DC!

Nuclear Power is Not the Answer
by Ralph Nader

Taxpayers alert! The atomic power corporations are beating on the doors in Washington to make you guarantee their financing for more giant nuclear plants. They are pouring money and applying political muscle to Congress for up to $50 billion in loan guarantees, to persuade an uninterested Wall Street that Uncle Sam will pay for any defaults on industry construction loans.

Two blows to Steve Levy’s anti-immigrant strategy

Unfortunately, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, a very conservative Democrat, has ruled the roost in Suffolk County, partly by feeding into anti-immigrant sentiment that exists out here in the burbs. Note, that Suffolk County is home of Farmingville, the place, and “Farmingville” the documentary which explores anti-immigrant sentiment towards day laborers. Between that current and whatever political maneuvers the man has, Steve Levy managed to secure the ballot line of all of the 5 major parties–including both the Democrats and the Republicans.

Though, today in Newsday, there are two blows to Levy’s strategy.

Suffolk County minority affairs chief resigns
August 27, 2007
James T. Madore in Albany

The Director of the Suffolk County Office of Minority Affairs, Edwin Perez, has resigned. It has been difficult for Levy to find someone to head this department for him, based on Levy’s actions and attitudes towards minority affairs. In fact, the article notes, the previous Director resigned citing disagreement with Levy’s stance against undocumented immigrants. And, at that time, many members of Levy’s Hispanic Advisory Board also resigned in protest.

Elections may tip political power on Long Island
August 27, 2007
Dan Janison

This story has a much more indirect message about Levy and his stance on immigration. The story shows that while some people may perceive Levy’s cross-endorsements as meaning that he has no opposition, that is not, in fact the case. Three candidates filed petitions to run against Steve Levy. (The article does not mention the even bolder message that one of the candidates – Ahmad Ali Mitchel-El – is specifically running on a platform that includes tolerance for immigrants.)

Maybe these happenings portend a shift in Suffolk County and/or Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. Continue reading

Scandal in NY: State Review Officer unfair to students with disabilities

This story has wide implications about how justice was served or not served on families seeking special education services through schools.

The State Review Officer (NY State Education Department) who was in the position of rendering decisions for or against parents’ petitions to have their children receive services was in a conflict of interest, and was overturning most decisions that were in favor of families. (Therefore, he was supporting school districts trying to deny services to disabled students.)

There is another story about it in the Wall Street Journal.

Excerpt from an article in the NY Sun:

Education Dept. Criticized Over Special Ed. Checks
BY ELIZABETH GREEN – Staff Reporter of the Sun

The state Education Department is coming under fire from attorneys from both inside and outside the agency who say it illegally denies educational services to hundreds of disabled children. Lawyers representing parents of disabled children are meeting today to discuss plans to file a civil rights lawsuit against the agency at the center of the conflict, the Office of State Review. Cindy Sheehan: “two-party system” has failed

Cindy Sheehan: Cindy for Congress?
by Cindy Sheehan
BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION

Photo by Ben SchuminI truly understand the not so supportive people, though, because I have been in their shoes. Here in the USA, most of us put our faith in a two-party system that has failed peace and justice consistently and repeatedly. The Republicans do not have a monopoly on the culture of corruption (although BushCo have elevated it to policy status) and the way we do politics in this country needs a serious shake up when all that we the people get is a shakedown. I was frightened out of ever voting for a third party, or independent candidate, but voting out of fear is one of the things that bestowed the Bush Crime Mob upon us and may give us the Republican in actuality, if not in name, Hillary Clinton.

Call Out The Instigator by Cindy Sheehan

Call out the Instigator
Because there’s something in the air
We got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution’s here
You know it’s right!

-Thunderclap Newman

I’m not backing off. I tried to remove myself from the political realm of the US, what BushCo is turning into an Evil Empire, but the blatant audacity of George commuting Scooter’s sentence (he’s not ruling out a full pardon —and you know he will) has dragged me kicking and screaming back in. I can’t sit back and let this BushCo drag our country further down into the murky quagmire of Fascism and violence, taking the rest of the world with them!

I have sat quietly back these past five weeks as the slaughter in Iraq sorrowfully surges along with George’s bloody escalation—and as the philosophical opposition to the war has soared to almost four out of every five Americans. I have remained silent when Senator Barack Obama said that impeachment is only reserved for “grave, grave” breeches! Well, BushCo has created hundreds of thousands of graves dug by their lies and greed. For cripes’ sake, George admitted to breaking the FISA Act (which is a felony) that also breeched the 4th Amendment to our Constitution that already prohibited illegal search and seizure. How was Bill Clinton’s offense graver than George’s, Dick’s, or Scooter’s? Did we ever think that the criminality and arrogance of the Nixon White House would be eclipsed in our time with nary a “baaaah” from the Sheeple in Congress?
